Hi Thomas,
It may happen if your IPN Handler is configured for PayPal live site but you are testing your BuyNow button with SandBox. Please note, the Verification status means, the control will capture the IPN and send back to PayPal site and PayPal site will send another notification if that site really sent the original notification. So, now think about a case when your IPNHandler control is set for sending IPN notification back to PayPal live site and you are testing your BuyNow button in SandBox. Then, when SandBox send the IPN to your IPNHandler control, the IPN handler control will send that IPN data (from SandBox) to PayPal live site (as it is configured to do so). Of course PayPal Live site did not send the original IPN and so PayPal live site will send 'Invalid' status. It may happen the opposite way too. If your IPNHandler is set for SandBox but if you are testing your BuyNow button with  Live Site. If you are handling IPN from the BuyNow Button's IPN_Notified event, then, there is no chance of this mistake. Please let me know if that solved the problem.
